About FIRST

About FIRST/FRC:

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology) is an international organization, which hosts annual competitions to inspire students to pursue science and engineering careers. Combining stem education curriculum with sporting event like tournaments giving science and technology an exciting twist. Along the way, members practice and learn skills that are important for the future, such as public speaking, technical presentation skills, teamwork, and cooperation with teammates as well as mentors.

Our mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.

FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition) is a high school robotics program in which participants design, prototype, and build a robot during the six-week build season from the beginning of January to the middle of February. FRC not only promotes the development of robotics, but is also devoted to the personal growth of its members through gracious professionalism.

FRC combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of 25 students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors.  It’s as close to “real-world engineering” as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team.
